The Past Is Weird and Hard!!

Well, I *had* a plan!

I was able to get out and make the time jump, though it was kinda late.  I figured it'd be past my moms' bedtime, so I could take some me-time and explore the world a bit.

It so didn't work.

The plan was, I'd buy a wetsuit and a surfboard, and go surfing.  Argent-mom loves the beach, and Soph-mom used to surf when she was young, and the whole "oceans" thing has always kind of fascinated me.  Comes from growing up in a country with gay dolphins on its flag, I guess!

So I went to Namiko Surf Shop, 'cause they take their responsibilities to the oceans really seriously, which I like to see. I paid for a wetsuit, and went off to find a beach.... and discovered I never got my wetsuit. So, like a total noob, I went back and bought *another*  - and didn't get that either.  Since I'm on an allowance from mom, I felt really horrible about that!

I figured I'd at least go for a walk on the beach, check out where the good waves are, and come back another time.  So I TP'd to Venice Beach  (it isn't in Venice - what's up with that??).  And I'd barely rezzed before some guy walked into me, then started talking at me in some abbreviated language, very strange.  He asked if I was from there, and I said no. When he asked where I was from, I proudly told him Extropia Core!  That seemed to confuse him, though - he asked if it was "in RL," and I told him no, it was in Extropia.  He said, "Im from here -LA," which I sorta figured was a sentence, though I had no idea what it meant.

Confused, lost (LA? Venice? Beach? What?), out 900 of these "Lindens" which I know are real important, and mom doesn't have that many to spare - I just gave up, tp'd back to Sophtropia, petted Murasaki a bit, and slipstreamed back uptime.

My first big solo adventure, huh?

Teen supergenius from the future pffft, as Soph-mom would say.  Lost money, *got* lost, got nowhere.  I thought things were supposed to be *simpler* in the past!

I'll try again - I didn't get raised to give up!  But it's a lot harder than I ever thought it'd be, back there...

Remember all those times Soph and I told you, "You have it easy! In my day we didn't have grid wide indexed searching, or local item caching, or quantum error capture nodes"? At least I assume we told you stuff like that, since we will be OMG incredibly old fogies in the future. Anyway, now you see what we were talking about ;) We have a long way to go before we catch up with where you come from.

But this place does grow on you. Think of it like going to camp, or visiting relatives who live on a farm. Everything smells funny, there's bugs, and it's drafty, but after a couple weeks you're out playing in the woods and taking care of the animals in the barn like you've been at it all your life.

And I'd barely rezzed before some guy walked into me, then started talking at me in some abbreviated language, very strange.

He was probably speaking "1334", it's a 21st Century dialect popular amongst certain socially isolated groups in the wider internet. It's also the language used by a lot of Griefers, so be careful.

Ah...hon, we have a lot of immigrants here from the atomic world who never manage to adjust to the rigors of living in a digital world. He's probably homesick for his home in atomic Los Angeles and deluding himself into thinking he's still there. Can't imagine that place can be any better than SL though. I've watched a lot of atomic world news and the place seems to be a giant disaster area: Volcanoes, busjackings, attacks by alien robots, and endless car chases. It's a wonder anyone can survive there at all. And don't even get me started on what it was like where I come from.

Love, I'm very glad you're out and exploring. Just please be careful, and if you run into any more strange guys remember what I taught you in hand-to-hand class: grab, then twist, then run like hell.

*shivers*

I've never been so glad to be Digital! That place sounds *awful,* and makes me feel a lot better about visiting the past!

And, I promise I'll be careful, mom. That trip kinda got me past my overconfidence, and assuming I could handle myself just fine. I'll be more on my guard now.

I *definitely* remember those lessons, don't worry!
